DevOps in Action – Orchestrating the Toolchain with ASG

In my last post, I started a series discussing how our customers are using ASG-Enterprise Orchestrator to unlock the potential of DevOps. In this post, we are expanding on the theme with another customer who is showing the benefits of orchestrating their DevOps toolchain. The customer is a large regional bank in the U.S., serving consumers’ banking and financial needs across several states. Like many large financial institutions, the enterprise relies on traditional mainframe processing for its mission-critical applications and high-speed, real-time, online transaction management – e.g. payment card authorizations, debit and credit posting, daily settlement, etc. – in addition to distributed and cloud infrastructure. Its IT leadership recognized the value of reducing time to market through the adoption of DevOps techniques early and committed to it quickly.

Automating the orchestration of their DevOps activity across their three primary environments – Development, Quality Assurance and Production – quickly became a priority. The company turned to ASG for those capabilities. Fortunately, the bank had already adopted ASG-Zena for their automated workload management and were excited to learn that ASG had built a DevOps toolchain orchestration capability from that foundation. This update gave them an easy and natural path to include the Development phase in their existing Operations management workflows.

Early success led to broadscale adoption; today over 170 users are engaged with ASG orchestration during both the Development and Operations phases of their DevOps cycles, with typically 30-40 users working concurrently at any given time. Reach extends out to more than 500 servers of different types and uses, coordinated from a central control. Use of ASG orchestration has become so pervasive and so essential to their day-to-day operations that it is classified as a “Tier 0” part of the bank’s infrastructure – i.e., it must always be available and operating to avoid negative impact on customers. The combination of development-time capabilities innately integrated with the run-time management results in over two million processes orchestrated every month.

The value of this orchestration is magnified by its ability to extend to the mainframe infrastructure as easily as distributed and cloud. This ensures the dependencies between mainframe jobs and off-mainframe tasks are coordinated, visible and monitored from a single view – even across multiple LPARs in a Sysplex. IT professionals remark that it is easier to model, deploy and monitor dependencies between IBM DataStage project using ASG orchestration, compared to using the IBM management tools available to them.
