  • Understanding the information supply chain. Data lineage is an important capability to identify and visualize how data flows from origin to destination.  The chain can be tracked from the data store to the consumer and back to the enterprise through applications and transactions.
  • Make information accessible.  Application developers and process designers must know what information is available to them, what it means and how to include it in applications.  Creating a business information glossary that is connected to data items provides a resource for their work, increasing the productivity of these important team members while also optimizing the engagement with customers.
  • Capture data needed for measurement.  Transforming without measuring success and defining how to improve is poor practice.  Organizations also need to identify the metrics, govern how they’re collected and make it available to business teams so they can identify opportunities for improvement.


Application Understanding, Transformation and Impact Analysis


Adapting and transforming your applications for new digital processes and devices is an important step in transforming your business. The monolithic nature of many long-established applications is an obstacle, and constant IT transformation leads to a cobweb of non-documented applications with hardly any updated skills to manage them.  Moreover, modern applications have a chain that interconnects with both inhouse and external applications, databases, data warehouses, etc., which need constant change due to the overarching dynamic requirements of the business. Restructuring and re-platforming may be urgent. However, changes will likely impact applications across the organization. And changes as small as the name of a column may prevent applications upstream and downstream from functioning properly. 

All transformation efforts that change data structures, applications, platforms or even end points must be managed carefully.  When adding mobile data collection, the fields and formats of data collected must fit into the current back end structure. Understanding and managing the impact of change requires that you:
  • Have visibility into the data structures and applications
  • Trace data as it flows through applications and map the steps and hops across the organization
These steps allow technical teams to extend applications to new mobile devices, leverage new digital techniques and follow changes through the IT infrastructure adapting other applications as needed or remaining consistent with current structures to minimize impacts and costs to the organization.
