How Content Federation Unlocks Enterprise Value

Content contains deep insights that drive business decisions, spur new services ideas and help organizations understand their customers. However, as content continues to grow in volume and velocity, organizations are struggling to discover, understand and leverage that value.

The Content Management Challenge

Enterprises need to establish processes to find, capture, extract, use and govern the information contained in content—but it’s complex. Most organizations are facing three main challenges:

  1. they are managing content by document type rather than by the information it contains

  2. there is a lack of infrastructure and processes to manage and use the content

  3. they have legacy systems that aren’t built for modern-day content challenges

When enterprise content and data is created and stored across multiple business systems, repositories and databases, silos are inevitable. Those information silos make it difficult for users to view, interact and unlock the value of data. Organizations could solve for this issue by consolidating repositories, overhauling legacy systems and migrating content into a single data lake—but most don’t have the means, nor the will power.
Herein lies the challenge. If organizations want to run an information-driven business, they need to make content useful to everyone in the enterprise. Content federation addresses this challenge and makes digital transformation possible.

What is Content Federation?

Content federation helps organizations bridge silos of information to provide enterprise-wide visibility and actionability.

By integrating the information stored in databases, content repositories, collaborative content stores and archiving systems, users can interact with it through a single consolidated view. With this capability, they can find and leverage the information they need across an enterprise’s entire IT ecosystem.

Yet most companies are far from federating content across their organizations. In some cases, they have federated content within specific departments, or for specific projects, but very few have federated content across lines of business or geographies, never mind the entire IT ecosystem. Newer companies have less legacy system proliferation, and thus a smaller challenge ahead, while well-established businesses must contend with more silos. However, content federation can help level the playing field.

ASG’S Approach to Content Federation

ASG pioneered content federation, and two decades later, we have evolved alongside technological advances and business landscapes to deliver our content federation solution: ASG Mobius Content Services (Mobius). Mobius connects and syndicates content across repositories including cloud platforms, business applications and databases.

ASG helps our customers implement federation across a variety of industries and use cases. We recently compiled some of our customers’ most effective applications of content federation. To read them and learn how content federation could benefit your business, download our whitepaper, “Seven Ways Federation is Being Applied in the Modern Enterprise.”
