Best Practices for Mobius Upgrades

This March, ASG hosted a webinar to ensure ASG Mobius Content Services (Mobius) customers are well-equipped to remain current with essential Mobius upgrades. Generally, people and organizations have mixed feelings about upgrading. While there are several reasons to upgrade your technology consistently, there is often resistance to spending more time or money on technology you already have. However, upgrades are highly beneficial – from ensuring your system remains stable and secure with the latest security patches, to accessing the latest configuration tools that simplify administration and increase efficiencies.

During the webinar, ASG explored what users should consider before, during and after an upgrade to ensure that Mobius upgrades are a straightforward, fruitful experience. For those who couldn’t make it, here are the top takeaways.

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare

The more prepared you are, the more smoothly your upgrade will proceed. Being prepared is holistic. Mobius doesn’t exist in a vacuum – it’s mission-critical. Therefore, you can’t simply execute an upgrade; any change will have implications to the repository and to foundational components, such as the operating system, database and browser. In each of our customer environments, different teams hold keys to those treasure chests. You need to know who does what, when you can take certain actions and what cyclical items you need to plan for.

Know Who Will Be Impacted

Organizations often have tunnel vision. They are focused on marketing, not product development; services, not marketing; and so on. Similarly, a Mobius admin is not the only person involved in a Mobius upgrade. You need database resources, operating system admins, web application experts, the end user community, and of course, the person with the purse strings. If an upgrade occurs without all of the right people involved, it will not run smoothly. If this step fails, Mobius admins may face disgruntled teammates, or worse, negative impacts to their work and the work of others.

Assess the Infrastructure

Once you’ve answered these questions, you need to look at the pyramid of supporting components you will build on top of – i.e., the infrastructure the organization already in place. Mobius is an integral component for other mission-critical systems, such as ERPs, CRMs, financial accounting systems, etc. that push information out to the user community. All of these pieces must be accounted for before a Mobius upgrade occurs. It’s not as simple a switching out one puzzle piece for another – the upgrade must fit within the framework of your organization to ensure business continuity.

Identify the Nuances

Preparation for an upgrade varies by organization. There are go-live windows for when upgrades can occur at some organizations, while others have more flexibility. Understanding your budgeting, procurement and legal processes is likewise critical.  Further, your project managers must understand where ASG fits in, how the upgrade should be conducted, what security is required, and how ASG Professional Services consultants will augment your team. ASG consultants might need background checks or other onboarding processes to comply with your regulations.
