When ASG’s CEO, Art Allen, heard that a major deal was hung up because the customer, a leading financial and investment services provider, felt the risk of migrating to the CA-IDMS® platform was too great, he provided a simple solution: He guaranteed, personally, that ASG would make the solution work.
The Challenge
Managing the risks associated with migrating principal CA-IDMS systems
to DB2® was a
major challenge for a leading financial and investment services provider.
With millions of customers needing instant access to account information,
the danger of a “big bang” cutover causing application disruption
seemed too big of a chance to take. In addition, prior experience
had left the highly experienced IT staff unsure that crucial business
applications would deliver adequate performance in the new environment.
To minimize the possible risk of business interruption, the company decided to replicate their IDMS data to DB2 instead of converting it. By having current data in IDMS and DB2 simultaneously, they could convert applications one-by-one, and make the transition risk free. It was vital that the replication be near instant so the technical staff could see the status of the IDMS updates by accessing the DB2 via the Web straight after the updates occurred.
The Solution
Allen was determined to create a solution that would meet the unique needs
of this company. Designing a tailor-made solution required the on-site
implementation of innovative technology that ASG committed to deliver.
The solution was to add “real-time” capabilities to ASG-Replication
Suite, the IDMS data distribution
solution. ASG developers worked on site solving the complex issues of performance,
integrity and reliability required to link databases across disparate
platforms. The same critical data was made available to programmers both
in IDMS and DB2 simultaneously, allowing all appropriate testing and
analyzing to be done prior to making an irrevocable cut-over to DB2.
ASG’s commitment provided a simple business
solution to a complex technical problem.
Measurable Results
Implementing ASG’s Replication Suite was a decision that has proved successful to the
services provider. Their site has been effectively running real-time replication in
production status with a normal latency time of less than a second during online updating.
And that’s with as many as 55,000 transactions per second (15 million per day!) and
IDMS response time of 0.12 seconds. The company’s mission-critical data is available
to their programmers in IDMS and DB2 format. They can continue to have the data
available in dual formats, for as long as they feel it is necessary, to ensure a
flawless transition to DB2.
